Post Partum Hemorrhage (PPH)
PPH or blood loss during and after delivery (24hrs) is the leading cause of maternal death world wide. Despite recent advances in obstetrics (pregnancy) care, it is still the leading cause of maternal deaths.
Who’s at risk?
- Primips- first pregnancy.
- Grand Multips- more than 5 pregnancies
- Obese women
- Preeclampsia- hypertension in pregnancy
- Over distended uterus – big baby or twins
- Anemia in pregnancy
- Long hours of labor and etc etc.
The bottom line is all pregnant women are at risk of bleeding to death.
What should you/we do?
- Always go to antenatal clinic when you are pregnant. Clinicians will identify risk factors (some mentioned above) and monitor your pregnancy to give you and your baby the best possible outcome.
- Space pregnancies- give time to your uterus to heal properly before the next pregnancy. 3 to 4 years. Husbands should take heed of this.
- Plan to deliver in a hospital. – relatives should donate blood when their wife, mother, sister or aunt is going for labor.
In 1630 Emperor Shah Jahan built Taj Mahal as a tomb for his Wife Empress Mumtaz Mahal after she died loosing blood giving birth to their 14th child!!
It is icon representing love for women and that no women should die of blood loss in labor.
I’m off to controlling some bleeders.
Top day fellas.
